MisFits- Media and Collective Identity

How do contemporary media represent nations, regions, ethnic , social, and collective groups in different ways?

The collective group of teenagers are represented as thuggish, immature, chavy. They are all youth offenders doing community service. This represents them in a negative way.
Everyone is sarcastic and joking about, a stereotypical representation of cocky teenagers.
they are dressed in orange coats , this links the character together and represents them as a group.
boys assume that girls have done less offensive things.

What do media theorists think about the way we read texts?

What role does television play in our lives?

The main purpose of television is to entertain people but at the same time educate us on different culture's, times, class's etc. By consuming more media on TV than actually going to different places it can give us a view of people before we meet them as all we know is what has been shown to us.

'Really, I build my life around television...Dallas is really soapbox..all wonderful dresses and glamorous girls. Believe me, I like Dallas...and Dynasty...But i prefer the Australian ones...I wouldn't miss Sons and Daughters if I could help it, because the story holds me. It always ends on a note that you are wondering where the next programme is going... That makes a person want to switch it on.A country practise i like very much...It's just sort of natural, down-to-earth everyday life... and its scenery is nice... And there's no swearing... It's clean. There is no rape or anything. I think that's refreshing... I don't like EastEnders because it's so down to earth...Life is very drab, anyway for me... People listening, like myself, like to be uplifted'

In this persons case being uplifted is the aim of TV so without the sinister things shown in much of the TV today it could give a very narrow view of the world with its ups and downs. In contrast to this if only the more sinister media on the TV was watched, a darker view of a particular place could become real to a person without real life situation keeping there opinions in check.

The key to the myths...of our own powerlessness...is that we've been robbed of our visionary ability. It's something that's taken away from us very early on by such concepts as 'Oh, it's only human nature' , 'boys don't do that kind of thing', 'it's always been that way', and other such...illusions, snares and traps, which both rob us of our history in terms of ways of... living that have been different, and also rob us of our ability to dream about the way that we think things could be.

What do media therorists think about the way we read media texts

What role does television play in our lives?
  • Entertainment
  • Reinforces the way people think about themselves
Why do we watch programmes we do?
  • Escapism
  • Relate to characters, storylines
  • Relate to particular collectives
Do we all read television programmes in the same way?
  • No, we do not. Everyone views it in relation to their own experiences
Does TV have a hidden agenda?
  • Reinforces stereotypes

Societies appear to be subject, every now and then, to periods of moral panic. A condition, episode, person or group of people emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests; its nature is presented is a stylised and stereotypical fashion by the mass media; the moral barricades are manned by editors, bishops, politicians and other right- thinking people; socially accredited experts pronounce the diagnoses and solutions; ways of coping are evolved or (more often) resorted to; the condition then disappears, submerges or deteriorates and becomes less visible ... Sometimes the panic passes over and is forgotten, except in folklore and collective memory; at other times it has more serious and long lasting repercussions and might producesuch changes as those in legal and social policy or even in the way the society conceives itself.

The media has a great power in the way young people are represented which is in a very stylised way, this is in a negative way of representing them, an example of this is within the series Mis Fits, young people are represented as criminals and commit violent acts. This therefore has an impact on the way society views them. In the future the younger generation will be upset by this and therefore act out against this.

This trend can also be seen in modern films such as Fish Tank where young people are represented as violent, abusive and self centered. However in Fish Tank the main character doesn't stay this was, as she decides to move away to seek a better life.

What do theorists think about the way we read texts?

Television is playing an increasingly more important role within the family system as many people now find it hard to imagine living without it. The media have a definite place in the family interaction pattern and structure the framework of family life.

The media are interpreted against the background of everyday life as it is lived and experienced, so the are used to cope with everyday problems. Audiences will choose to watch different programmes due to their demeaning features such as age, gender and background. Some of the reasons that people watch programmes are for enjoyment, information, escapism, general interest, research, education, personal identity, seeking advice, integration, social interaction and entertainment.

Some theorists such as Emile Durkheim believe in collective consciousness, which means that a group of people will all take the same meaning from a text, as everyone have the set set of morals and agree with what is wrong and right. This theory fits in with the theory of a passive audience, which uses the 'hyperdermic needle' theory, meaning that people do not have their own opinions. Whereas, the theory of active audience believes in the 'uses and gratification model' which believes that each audience member is an individual and therefore reacts differently towards a text.

I think that aswell as using stereotypes in order to put a point across and show problems with certain cultures clearly, television also challenges stereotypes in order to change peoples opinions of different cultures. However, how television portrays certain stereotypes are subjective to how that director wants them to be shown and are not always considered accurate or realistic, as theorists such as David Buckingham suggest within the 'After the death of Childhood'  theory where it is argued that the media represents childhood in one of two ways. Either as innocent, in order to preserve that time as idilic, or corrupt in order to play of adults anxieties, because it is a representation of adults and how they see/remember things.

What do media therrists think about the way we read texts? Charlie and Steve

Media theorists believe that there is a certain way in which we read media texts. Television plays a role in our lives because "it is a social event" quote from Television Drama by John Tulloch. Television being a social event means that it is up for discussion and people can discus with the tv and with others.
We watch the programs we do because theorist believe that we enjoy programs with characters we can associate with
In this changing environment, the 'old' in the shape of the corporations voices brands and economic imperatives that dominate offline - is just as likely to affect the 'new' as the 'new' is likely to make life difficult for the 'old'

The death - or at least the decay - of the established mass media has been long predicted. Confronted by the challenge of dynamic new media technologies like cable, satellite and especially internet have seen the erosion of their well established domination of popular consumption habits

1. television plays a pivotal role in our lives as it takes over the majority of peoples free time. It has also take over the traditional value of spending 'family time' together, as they are just watching TV together instead.

2. We watch the programmes we do as they provide entertainment, information and the ability that people can relate to them as they have had similar experiences, or the companies tailor progrmmes to peoples needs.
